Why Stephen Fry is my second favourite British man

I know my accent doesn’t come across well in blog posts, but I’m originally from California. Growing up, if you’d asked me what British men were like, I’d have said this: incredibly intelligent, very droll, and exceedingly kind-hearted.

Flash forward to me watching QI for the first time and ‘meeting’ Stephen Fry, my second favourite British man.*

I wouldn’t be explaining all this to you if Stephen Fry hadn’t done something that sealed his place in my heart.

Two Australian first aiders help a manWhen we launched an emergency appeal to help victims of the Australian bushfires, he tweeted about it.

Stephen Fry is an avid tweeter. His Twitter account has nearly 400,000 followers, so when he wrote about our appeal, all those people heard about it.

The British Red Cross’ Twitter account has 1,700 cherished followers, something I’m proud of considering we only had seven when 2009 started. We’ve been encouraging some of our colleagues (including blogger Sarah Oughton) to tweet about their project visits to places like Sierra Leone and Kazakhstan, and they’ve done a fantastic job.

Next week I’ll let you know about our next Twitter feature (my manager made me promise never to use the word I think I made up – ‘tweature’ – so I won’t).

Do you want to become one of my favourite people? We launched an appeal to help survivors of the Italy earthquake, and we want people to spread the word using their Twitter accounts. Please mention @britishredcross and send people to www.redcross.org.uk/earthquakeappeal. You can also sign up to follow us and we’ll follow you right back.

*My husband Tim is my favourite British man. He embodies all Stephen Fry’s best traits, although he’s much less familiar with Twitter.

Awww, thanks Mom! Any ideas yet how you’ll become more involved? Maybe you could start by sponsoring me for Wig Wednesday! Or find out what’s going on with the American Red Cross in San Diego.
