Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3

Did you know that the British Red Cross has several overseas branches in the Caribbean? As part of the work going on there, the Red Cross is hosting a youth camp for young Red Cross workers in the Caribbean to have an opportunity to interact. The whole idea is to create international friendships, learn from eachother, and work together for the greater good.

Below, are some blog posts sent to me by one of the participants– Jiva Niles of the Anguilla Red Cross. I know this post is quite long, but I hope that it is the most user-friendly way to share his story with you:

Day 8 – 1 August, 2009:

Falling for the Falls
Camp participants left the camp grounds to go and visit the Darkview Waterfall. Standing in the falls was exhilarating and therapedic. Following this activity was a swim in a river.

Say totally AWESOME!!!!!!

Day 9 – 2 August, 2009:

Beach Walk
With the provision of adult supervision, camp participants that longed to visit the beach walked there. The journey was tiresome, though rewarding when persons were able to view and capture images of St. Vincent’s nature sites.

On the Move
Red Cross volunteers from each of the 19 represented National Society marched the streets of Campden Park, singing songs and created catchy rhymes about the organization. Hand-made torches with the emblem were lit and were walked around with as well as some volunteers held signs with powerful slogans conveying the information taught at the camp.

The theme Youth on the Move was definately adhered to both literally and figuratively in this fun exercise.

Blog All About it!!!
The Closing Cermmony marked the conclusion of a very successful and beneficial Regional Youth Camp 2009. This is so as the information revealed at community projects, simulation exercises and workshops are relevant to the youth volunteers. Displays of playing music, dancing, reciting poems and so on aided a very memorable and enjoyable “Goodbye.”

Day 10 – 3 August 2009:

TTYL RYC Buds!!!
Whats really so “”Good about Bye? The day commenced 4:00am, especially in consideration of those campers who had early flights. Last minute contact info, National Society shirts and pin swapping was done. In additon to this, there were some very touching and tearful “Good” Byes.

Beautiful thematic issues were discussed and all the topics were paramount in todays turbulant times for youths.I liked the “ficcolata” or torch light parade wich was a key event in the 150 year anniversary of the Red Cross, Red Cresent movement in Solferino, its a strong sighn of the Principle of Unity and an underpinning value of this principle is Respect for Diversity.I believe that in youth gatherings there lies the strongest pilar of the Red Cross,Red Cresent movement started by a young man Henry Dunant who in todays age categories would have been considred as a youth.
