My special days of the week – Part 4

The Glasgow Festival

I am a first aid volunteer as well as a refugee support volunteer. On weekends, when the refugee unit is closed, I sometimes am on first aid duty.  I get to meet other Red Cross volunteers from different areas. When we are on duty, we always have lots of fun.

I have now been in Glasgow for three years but I did not know about all these local events before I joined the First Aid team. I have been able to see lots of different ones such as games, family fun, sports, concerts, festivals and so many more.

When we are on duty, members of the public come to us with different kinds of injuries. Blisters, cuts, swollen body parts, bruises and so many others. We have different treatments for each type, those with deep cuts and suspected broken injury are given first aid and are advise to go to hospitals for an X-rays or stitches.

We always have a duty officer, who does the pairing up. Depending on how many volunteers are on duty that day. Some remain in the First Aid post and some walk around in pairs in case someone, somewhere gets an injury further away from the post.

I was on first aid duty at the Glasgow Show Festival on Saturday 1st and 2nd August. I had the most amazing time. I saw a lot of things like different kinds of flowers, live music. There were stalls for vegetables just fresh from their gardens and for less than a pound. There were also stalls with information from different organisations. I picked some that would help us at the Red Cross Refugee Unit. Many, many more activities took place on this festival day.

My most interesting moment was when I saw a robot and it was singing love songs. It had a male voice when singing to a woman and a female voice when singing to a man.

When the robot was taken away, I was surprised to see that it started crying like humans because it did not want to go away from the people.

Horses are very huge animals, when I watched cowboy films I used to think they were just average size. But they are high up and very large, though not like an elephant.

I had also a chance to use my therapeutic care knowledge to give hand massage to a clown who had sore thumbs after bending many balloons for the kids. After 10 minutes massage he was able to continue the balloon bending. He was really grateful and thanked me with a heart balloon with “THANK YOU” written on.

I look forward to doing more events.
