Win a first aid manual!

First aid manual

The competition has now ended so you can no longer submit your answers, sorry! Find out the answers and the winner.

We’ve got a brand-spanking new first aid manual to give away to one of our lucky blog readers.

Here’s how you win it:

1. Take the quiz below.

2. Submit a comment with your answers.

3. Wait until 9 September to find out if you’re the lucky winner.

Here’s how we’ll choose a winner:

To celebrate World First Aid Day, we’ll randomly choose a number based on the number of comments we get (in other words, if there are 50 comments, we’ll choose a number between 1 and 50; if there are 100 comments, we’ll choose a number between 1 and 100).

If the person who left that comment number had the right answers to the quiz, we’ll send them an email telling them they won the manual.

If they didn’t get the answers right, we’ll randomly choose another number until we find someone who did. The judge’s decision is final. We’ll choose the winner at 4pm on 9 September. Submit your comment before then!

We’re willing to send the manual anywhere in the world, so our international friends should feel free to enter. Also, just to make sure there are no allegations of match fixing, you cannot win if you are one of our bloggers. Sorry, guys.

Got it? Good.

(Hint: check out the first aid tips and videos on our website)

Here’s the quiz:

1. You’re having dinner with your partner and he/she starts choking on a roast potato. They can’t speak, cough or breath. What’s the first thing you should do?

a. panic
b. give them five back blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand
c. give them five abdominal thrusts
d. check their life insurance policy

2. Which two of the following are symptoms of a heart attack?

a. lips turning blue
b. a cheese-like odour from the feet
c. sudden fainting or dizziness
d. puffy eyes

3. In the world of first aid, what does RICE stand for?

a. respiration, injection, check pulse, evaluate
b. rest, ice, comfortably support, elevate
c. really impressive cutting emergency
d. resuscitate, isolate, compressions, elevate

So come on, post your answers – it could be you. Good luck!

I would have thought a symtom of a heart attack would have been pain in the chest rather than puffy eyes.

In question one, the first thing I would do to some-one I suspect of choking would be to ask them if they were, just to clarify the situation before slapping them hard between the shoulder blades. They may be a stranger and could take offence with me if I did not check first.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to volunteer as a first aider. Not only has it given me confidence in assisting others when required, but also helped me to make a choice about what I would like to do with my future.

The importance of first aid cannot be overemphasized. The very act of saving a life, preserves the family, ensures the peaceful existence of a community and ultimately , a Nation. Hence Mothers, Fathers must be taught basic skills. How? I advocate that it should be a integral part of training for every cadre of the work force. Children should be taught simple steps, using simple terms and illustrations. PLEASE, We should not leave that for School Teachers. As a Parent , You owe it to your Child!

First Aid should be a compulsory subject in schools. In fact everybody should know First Aid. First Aid can save lifes and unfortuantely people only relaise the importance when an emergency happens. Therefore, this should be taught in all schools as part of life skills. Children are taught so much and yet we miss the most vital lessons.

Forget “citizenship” in schools, a new module called “life skills” should be made compulsory along with reading & writing – covering First Aid, basic home maintenance like how to change a lightbulb (yes we have many 22 yr olds at university who have no clue!), how to sew on a button, how to cook simple nutritious meals, basic budgetting/money skills, etiquette (business & social) & other things appropriate to the age group.

Considering how much money our Government has just wasted on Swine Flu it is my opinion that they have a better chance of swaying votes if they invested in – at the very LEAST – CPR training for everyone over the age of 16. I believe everyone would undertake training were it an option.

I haven’t had much need to use my training so far, except to pop a plaster on one colleagues little finger! I suppose I should be pleased that I haven’t had to spring into action regarding anything more major.

I had to put my First Aid skills in practice – on myself. I remembered RICE after I fell getting off the bus with my shopping. I twisted my ankle and broke my elbow! Luckily I had just bought a packet of frozen peas!! I was told when I went to A & E that because I did RICE right away it did help with the swelling.

Everyone should get First Aid skills as you never know when they will come in useful even if it is on yourself.

Children should be taught first aid from primary school. They could do an annual upgrade going into more detail as they get older. Young minds are like sponges and absorbe so much. When I was doing a revision course I had left my manual on the table and my grandchildren had a fantastic afternoon with their granfather as the injured person.

First aid is so important to know and it boost your confidence and knowledge each time you apply first aid to someone.

I think it should be taught in schools so it becomes second nature to help someone in trouble and it would help people be more confident in the use of first aid.

This also helps the emergency service before they arrive on the scene to have information from the first aider.

Knowledge of basic first aid is essential for everyone, both at home and in the workplace. You can never know what will happen and it is better to be prepared for such emergencies, than be caught out and not know what to do.

I probably saved a life of my friend who choked having a laugh during the dinner. Instead of of back blows I used abdominal thrust – worked perfectly! I wasn’t first aider then but if situation repeated I probably would be tempted to use it again… I do belive it is gentler and safer option than blows when executed properly… Aren’t blows dangerous for somebody suffering bad back/disc problems/osteoporosis etc? I wonder if there is any published scientific data or comparison of efficiency and safety of those two methods…

As an active first aider at work, and trained first responder, I have learnt a lot of useful skills that when the occassion arises, I can help someone in difficulty. Many people lack the most basic skills for dealing with a situation, even common sense does not move them in to action. Have seen some excellant short scenarios played during the adverts, and between programmes on Television, I think this is the best way of educating the public, even if the are not interested, some information will be retained by repeat display, and may be retained for future action.

We have all benefited from the learning the basics as we spend alot of time doing various sporting activities. Keep up the great work, the more people who take part in this training, the safer we all are.

There are a number of interesting comments here, and I was going to add my voice to the call to ensure that first aid training is given to all children as part of the National Curriculum – if there is such a thing nowadays with all the education reforms. However, we should go further, in that I believe we should fall into line with other European countries who require all motorists to carry first aid kits, thus promoting first aid in the wider community. Even one life saved in this way would be worth the effort.

First Aid Training is brilliant – it should be on everyone’s “to do” list. I can go about normal life knowing that I am confident about my life saving skills and happy to use them should there be a need.

Within weeks of completing my first aid training, an incident at work left me in no doubt how useful and necessary it is to have a qualified first aider at work.
