Oh we do like free stuff, don’t we? You applied in your droves to the two competitions we ran recently on our blog site to win two books, and now there’s another great freebie everyone can get their hands on.
The Guardian is giving away Essential First Aid, a booklet containing material provided by our very own British Red Cross first aid team, with tomorrow’s paper. So, if you entered our recent competition to win the Red Cross first aid manual, but were unsuccessful, don’t forget to pick up this handy guide instead. It could prove invaluable in an emergency.
I’ve managed to get a sneak preview; here are a few frequently asked first aid questions, answered in the booklet, to whet your appetite. Do you know the answers?
Bleeding
Q: Should I apply direct pressure to a wound or should I elevate it?
Shock
Q: Is it true that a hot drink (such as tea) helps someone in shock?
Sprain and strain
Q: What is the difference between a sprain and a strain?
Unconscious
Q: By delivering chest compressions will I restart the heart?
If you’re not already a trained first aider, the booklet might inspire you to learn some skills. If so our website has loads of useful first aid tips and videos to help you get started. You can also sign up to a Red Cross training course here. Or – if you do nothing else – buy a first aid kit.
