Crazed young students assault manikin

Well, actually they didn’t. But that headline did get your attention, didn’t it? The truth is rather more prosaic – and much more impressive.

Apparently, one group of school students has taken so enthusiastically to learning first aid that their little hands have gradually pummelled a state-of-the-art CPR manikin into submission.

Grimsdyke_CPRAfter two years of constant first aid training, younglings at Grimsdyke School in Pinner have completely worn out the class’ resus dummy. Now, much like the Monty Python parrot, their plastic friend is deceased, expired, demised. In short, it is a ex- manikin.

Teaching assistant Mrs Morrow has been using the Red Cross’ Life. Live it. First aid education kit to teach the students life-saving skills for the past two years. The kit covers all the first aid basics using a series of fun, interactive lessons and practical sessions.

She said: “Our students are so keen and eager to learn first aid that some even give up their lunch breaks to practice.”

Unquestionably, such conduct is very impressive but part of me mourns the loss of bygone ways. Whatever happened to traditional playtime pursuits: such as smoking round the bike sheds, nicking sweets from the tuck shop and duffing up younger children?

Still, maybe I’m just being nostalgic. And by opting to only give the manikin a good leathering, the students at Grimsdyke will hopefully ensure that they’re ready to help if ever faced with a living, breathing, non-plastic casualty.
