Save a life – get a date!

Boys: struggling to meet that special someone and throbbing with envy every time you see a good-looking woman on someone else’s arm? Then maybe you should follow Jamie Hemingway’s example – by learning first aid, he’s ended up with a hot date at the Ritz.

Sixth-form pupil Jamie was standing beside Sarah Hilcott, 28, (a ‘stunner’, to use the common tabloid parlance) when she was knocked down by a speeding car in Bromley. As is often the way with these things, about five or six adults rushed immediately to her side then stood about doing nothing.

But Jamie was made of sterner stuff. He recalled: “She was lying on the road and I realised I had to help. I’ve had first aid training so I just went into autopilot.

“I started giving her CPR but the whole time I was scared she was going to die. I kept going for about five minutes and when she started breathing it was such a relief. It felt amazing. The paramedics told me she would have died if I hadn’t done what I did.”

Sarah, who’s now on the mend, swooned: “Once I started breathing again, he put me into the recovery position and also took care of my broken collar-bone and leg. I wish most boys his age were as kind and caring as him. Jamie is a remarkable young man.”

Sarah has already phoned the young hero and is also planning to take him for a slap-up meal at The Ritz to say thank you.

Obviously, given the slight discrepancy in age (12 years) it’s not entirely certain that the Ritz meal will result in the romantic adventure of the century. But still, what an ego boost for a young lad. And next time, he just needs to make sure he stands next to a younger woman…
