This Saturday evening, we can be sure of three things. Hundreds of fires will be blazing across the country. Thousands of fireworks will explode. And sadly, thousands of people across the country will find themselves faced with a burn injury.
Whether in Perth, Penzance or Portadown, it’s a sad fact that all kinds of revellers – teenagers, parents, children – will come off the worst with fireworks this weekend. Such injuries most often occur at family or private parties where there’s no professional medical help on hand, and the key thing with burns is treating the problem immediately.
That’s why it’s so important to know what to do if someone gets burned. And that’s why the Red Cross has spent the last few weeks teaching a special first aid and fire safety workshop to 3,500 schoolchildren across the North East.
Red Cross youth manager Mel Williams said: “We’ve made it really easy for young people to learn vital first aid skills, like how to deal with burns or call the emergency services.
“The children really enjoyed learning first aid and now feel confident they’d know what to do if a friend or family member needed help. They often pass on what they have learnt to others as well, so they can stay safe too.”
So how should you treat a burn injury? Watch our video to find out.
