What not to wear

Guess the ideal outfit for budding triathletes…

  1. a Batman costume
  2. a full wetsuit, mirror sunglasses and a serious expression
  3. nothing but a tiny pair of Speedos

BatmanI’d have thought the answer was obvious, but apparently not, as I was confronted by all three while watching the London Triathlon yesterday. Though thankfully the wetsuits very much outweighed the Speedos. No one’s physique is that honed.

The clothing choice isn’t quite enough to transform me from committed spectator to triathlete, but seeing how proud all the thousands of very fit (and very sweaty) athletes were did get me thinking about what might.

I spoke to one guy who just couldn’t get over how “awesome” it was and how pumped he was feeling. Another was rightly chuffed at having smashed his personal best.

While the triathlon’s 1500-metre swim, 40km bike ride and 10km run is a challenge too far for me, as I can barely run for a bus, I’m sure there’s something more realistic for the somewhat lazy among us. I’d get a real sense of achievement from managing even one part of a triathlon (so could always enter as part of a team next year).

I could join one of our bike rides – the only decision then would be choosing between Lancashire or Vietnam.

Or I’m toying with doing one of the new Great Swims. Because if the Red Cross provides triathletes with a stylish running vest or t-shirt, I’d surely get a swimsuit?
