Today is the launch of a brand new British Red Cross education resource – all based around international humanitarian law (IHL) and wider issues of justice and fairness – pulled together with help of law firm Allen & Overy.
The education resource is made up of great ideas for lessons, photography to really get students talking, follow-up activities and details of further resources. All of it can be downloaded at our new ‘Justice and Fairness’ education pages – at the moment Module 1 (of which there are two parts) is available to download and others will follow later this year and next.
IHL has always been a very important issue for the Red Cross so it is great to see it getting more attention beyond our world. Students starting back at school who are studying Citizenship Studies GCSE will be learning all about IHL as it is now part of the curriculum for the first time – the result of three years advocacy work by the British Red Cross.
Although primarily launched for teachers, the hope is that students inspired to find out more will also use the resource. You could help us promote this by mentioning it to any teacher friends you have or directing young people needing help on project ideas to our ‘Justice and Fairness’ education pages.
On a much more personal note, I’ve worked on many corporate partnerships now at the British Red Cross and this one with Allen & Overy is a great example of how partnerships can really help out and add value (in the non-financial sense). Allen & Overy lawyers have worked on pulling Module 1 together alongside our education specialists, and are/will be doing the same for the other modules – while others have organised a fashion show fundraiser, and others still are working on an IHL and education conference due to take place later this year.
Enough from me – have a look for yourself!
