Give a little help for Red Cross Appeal Week

Hi, my name’s Laura and I’m addicted to Red Cross Appeal Week.

It all started in a draughty train station in 2008 – when I was handed a tabard and bucket and sent out to face the oncoming crowds of commuters at Manchester Victoria station at 7.30 in the morning.

I have to admit I was pretty scared at first – I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into. But it didn’t take long for the buzz to kick in (mind you, that could have been the caffeine kick given the hour!).

It gave me such a high that so many people recognised us and knew that by donating to us they’d be able to help the most vulnerable.

The next year I came back for more. I was now working as a fundraiser – actually getting my hands dirty and convincing others to get involved too. And we had a great time.

This year, there is no going back – I am well and truly on the slippery slope to full-blown Red Cross Appeal Week addiction. I am now working as the national co-ordinator of RCAW and this year we are going all out. We have a fantastically funky new website, we are even releasing the very first RCAW music video in order to get those who have never even heard of RCAW involved.

But we can’t forget the thing that got me hooked in the first place – the thousands of collections happening right across your area. So how do you get involved?

Well, there are lots of ways to support the Red Cross during Appeal Week. How about testing your community skills by becoming an Appeal Week champion and inspiring others to join the cause? Or you could find out what events are already planned in your local area, sign up and join in the fun. Even decluttering your house and donating those DVDs, books, clothes and unwanted pressies to your local British Red Cross shop could bring in urgently needed cash. Just stick a RCAW label to your stuff when you take it in to let us know you’re supporting Appeal Week.

However you choose to get involved, remember that, with a little help from you, we can continue helping people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.
