On Tuesday, Alix wrote about the Start Garden Party to Make a Difference where the Red Cross stand is hosting a series of fantastic upcycling workshops. The list of workshops is so brilliant that we’ve decided to run a series of blog posts on them so that, even if you can’t make the party, you can at least have a go at some DIY fashion at home.
I tried out the first one – Transform run by From Somewhere – and learned how to turn an old scarf into a beautiful top. All the tops made will be donated to the Red Cross and the same design will also feature in From Somewhere’s new collection.
What you need
Square scarf
Needle and thread
About ten buttons including two quite big ones
7cm of elastic (at least 1cm thick)
Instructions
1. Fold the scarf in half and tack the corners together with pins.

2. Sew the corners together with a few simple stitches.

3. Cut a 7cm piece of elastic and sew it behind the two sets of corners you have stitched.

4. Sew one of the larger buttons over the place where the two corners and the elastic joins. Repeat this for the other two corners with another large button.
5. Sew the rest of the buttons along the length of the elastic until all the elastic is covered.

Ta da – you have your very own top!
I must admit I didn’t quite finish the back of my top, so here’s a sneaky ‘here’s one I made earlier’ image so you can see just how great the top looks on!
This workshop will also run on Sunday 12 and Thursday 16 September

Victoria used to write about all things fundraising for the British Red Cross, but now she's working overseas.
