Dave Spikey beats the freeze

Dave Spikey probably thought he’d got away with it. The top TV comic – star of Phoenix Nights and 8 Out of 10 Cats – had previously agreed to headline a comedy benefit gig for the Red Cross but, come the big night in December, he was completely snowed in at his Lancashire home.

Dave had already called the organisers of the Sheffield show to let them know there was ‘no chance’ he’d be able to make it. And I can just picture him now: settled on the sofa, gas fire blazing, cup of steaming tea in hand and re-runs of Phoenix Nights (well, the scenes with him in them anyway) playing on the telly.

But then John Pickett, a Red Cross first aider, heard about Dave’s snowy lock-in and decided: this shall not pass. Hopping into his Land Rover – one of those snazzy 4×4 ones that can drive through rivers and up cliffs and down vertical walls (maybe) – he headed through the deep snow to Chorley.

The boy Spikey, good sport that he is, happily turned out in the freezing cold and joined John for a 100-mile round trip to the gig, helping raise £6,000 in the process. I already knew he was a good comedian (I like to think he aims towards my own blog-writing style in his finer comic moments) but now I think he’s a proper good egg as well.

So be warned, TV comedians: when you agree to help the Red Cross, we will find you, we will hunt you down. We will have your celebrity endorsement.
