Blogs highlighting the work of staff and volunteers within the British Red Cross, part of the largest humanitarian organisation movement in the world.

When I tell people I work for the British Red Cross they assume I spend my time leaping from a helicopter onto a disaster area, pulling children from rubble while giving CPR to a nun.
Usually I do nothing to correct them because I’m a vain, vain man but in my more honest moments I tell them I actually manage health and social care services in Glasgow, Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire.
You should see their faces fall. They show the kind of disappointment usually reserved for my mum on parents’ evening. Or mother’s day. That’s the injustice this blog aims to tackle! We do fantastic work in the UK. Such as:
Our medical equipment depot had a call from a guy whose dad was desperately ill and in need of a wheelchair. We stayed open late for him so he could get to us after work and take the chair home to his dad that night. He was back a week later. His dad had died a few days after getting the chair but his son was so grateful for our help.
Without it his dad would have spent the last week of his life in bed. Instead, he was able to move from room to room in his house, sit in his garden, tour the neighbourhood. He could see his world a little more before he left it. That’s huge. That’s what we do every day.
That’s why I shouldn’t have to lie about my job when I go to school reunions.
