Let’s face it – the only thing that’s certain over the August Bank Holiday weekend is unpredictable weather. So here’s a list of things you can do whether the sun’s shining or the country’s shrouded in rain.

People walking in a garden1. Visit an open garden.

Members of the public open their gorgeous gardens and charge a few quid entry, which goes to support our work. We’ve got a couple Open Gardens scheduled over this weekend, but if there’s not one near you, why not search through upcoming dates?

2. Clean out your closets and donate your forgotten treasures to our charity shops.

If it’s chucking down rain, what better way to spend a day than unpacking your autumn clothes. And if you find anything that no longer fits, or doesn’t suit your style any more, your local Red Cross charity shop would love to take your donations.

Please call the shop before making a trip, as shops may be closed on Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday.

3. Learn some first aid.

Another great rainy day activity – watch our first aid videos and practise basic first aid skills, like putting your partner in the recovery position. If you have kids, you should check out our dedicated Children first aid site. Make sure you know how to help them in an emergency, and quiz them on how what they should do if you’re ever in trouble.

You can also browse our list of first aid courses and see what we offer near you.

4. Sign up for the Great South Run.

Get your rear in gear and join our team for the Great South Run. What better way to make sure you stay fit as the summer draws to a close, while raising money to help people around the world? The run’s on 24 October, so you’ll be well-justified in stuffing your mouth over the holidays.

5. Start planning a fundraising event.

It might not seem like it, but the holidays are just around the corner. Get together with your friends and brainstorm fantastic events you could put on to raise money and support our work.

We’ve got local fundraisers ready to help, so contact us and let us know your ideas.

Any other ideas you can think of?

Two first aiders at a festivalWe teach people life-saving first aid skills in the hope that your community will be able to withstand an emergency or crisis – whether that’s your sister, your best friend, a neighbour, or a stranger.

Our volunteers also provide vital first aid cover at many local events such as football matches, festivals and exhibitions.

Could you help someone in need?

Alix's pix 009I have read and written so much about first aid during the 15 months I have been at the Red Cross. So it was great to finally get to grips with my very own plastic dummy at a Red Cross basic first aid course recently.

The timeliness of my course was underlined by a recent first aid emergency in my family; my Mum broke her wrist badly at the top of Scafell Pike while we were doing the 3 Peaks Challenge by Rail, in September.

Woman giving rescue breathes

Having recently completed a one-day British Red Cross first aid course, I was fascinated to read about the controversy surrounding the kiss of life in The Daily Mail, Mirror and Metro.

Apparently, an Arizona university study has called into question whether the kiss of life, used in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) , is necessary when treating a cardiac arrest.

The festive holiday season is fast approaching. I’m sure many lucky people firstAidEquipment#1#have made plans to escape to far and exotic places. If you are one of those people then let me say…I’m jealous, very jealous.

In preparation, The Observer has been running a travel series called “My crap holiday”. Their readers have been sending in tales of woe about their horrendous holiday experiences. The British Red Cross have teamed up with The Observer to give away a free first aid kit to every lucky reader who has their story published.
